Actor Lance Reddick passed away on Friday at the age of 60, according to his publicist. Reddick was best known for playing a tough-talking police commander on the critically acclaimed television drama "The Wire" and for his supporting roles in the "John Wick" action movie trilogy.

According to a statement made by Reddick's publicist, Mia Hansen, the actor passed away unexpectedly on Friday morning from natural causes. His death's circumstances weren't immediately made public, therefore no more information was given.

According to law enforcement authorities and celebrity news website TMZ.com, the performer was discovered dead at his Studio City, Los Angeles, residence at around 9:30 a.m.

His passing occurred just a few days before the anticipated March 24 release of the fourth "John Wick" film, in which Reddick recurred in his role as Charon, a hotel manager who is a friend to the main character, a retired assassin played by Keanu Reeves.

As police commander Cedric Daniels on the HBO crime thriller "The Wire," which is filmed in Reddick's native Baltimore, he landed his first significant movie role. The show, which debuted in 2002 and ran for five seasons, was recognised as one of television's greatest dramas for its realistic portrayal of urban conflict from the viewpoints of police, drug dealers, and the civilians caught in the between.

On the Los Angeles-based cop drama "Bosch," a programme from the streaming site Amazon Prime, Reddick later portrayed a similar position as a big-city police chief. He was tall, had a shaved head, and had a knack for playing understated but imposing authority figures.

Beginning with season four of the ABC series "Lost," he also had appearances in two shows that J.J. Abrams co-created. Reddick was able to join the cast of "Fringe," a Fox network series in which he played the chief of an FBI unit looking into paranormal activity, because that role was quickly killed off.

Notable television roles include those in the Emmy-winning FX anthology series "American Horror Story" as a Voodoo master named Papa Legba, the HBO prison series "Oz" as undercover police investigator Johnny Basil, and the upcoming Disney+ series "Percy Jackson and the Olympians" as the Greek god Zeus.

Beside "John Wick," other motion picture work included cameos in suspenseful films including "Angel has Fallen," "Monster Party," and "Godzilla vs. Kong." He was also well-known among gamers for providing the voice of Commander Zavala in the "Destiny" brand shooter series.

Reddick, a pianist with classical training, studied music at the Peabody Preparatory Institute, participated in the summer music theory and composition programme at the Walden School, and eventually graduated from the University of Rochester's Eastman School of Music with a bachelor's degree in classical composition.

In 2007, he issued "Contemplations & Remembrances," a jazz album.

The day before he passed away, Reddick shared a photo of himself on his Instagram page, showing the actor grinning while lounging on a sofa in his living room with four canine companions.

Star actor Wendell Pierce paid tribute his "Wire" co-star on Twitter, calling Reddick a "guy of incredible strength and grace" and the "epitome of class".

"Here, you left your mark. RIP, "Pierce said.

Reddick leaves behind his wife Stephanie, whom he wed in 2011, as well as their children, a son and a daughter.
