Canada Will Accept More Syrian And Turkish Immigrants After The Earthquake.

According to Immigration Minister Sean Fraser on Saturday, Canada would prioritise visa applications from citizens of Syria and Turkey and will ease the process for them to extend their stay in the country.

The 7.8-magnitude earthquake that struck southern Turkey and northern Syria on February 6 together with a number of strong aftershocks resulted in more than 50,000 fatalities and millions of displaced people.

Fraser stated that the government will waive the application fees for those from Turkey and Syria who have temporary statuses to visit relatives, study, or work in Canada and will allow them to request for an extension.

He declared that his office will give earthquake victims' temporary visa applications top priority.

"We will be able to treat people who apply for a temporary resident visa with priority processing," Fraser noted.

Internally, we are putting in place extra steps to guide our officers and make it easier for their cases to be approved so they can enter Canada.

Fraser claimed that the government had learned from its attempts to admit refugees from Ukraine following Russia's invasion of that nation the previous year. Many more people from Ukraine received temporary protection from the government than it could have through standard refugee resettlement programmes, he claimed.

He added, "We're utilising a new technique to help facilitate the entrance of persons who find themselves in those circumstances (who) typically may not be approved to come to Canada.

"The precise approach we're adopting involves the use of advanced analytics within the IRCC system to identify those who have been affected by the earthquake and to provide a positive eligibility determination for a complete group of applicants at once," the statement continued.

According to the government, as of March 10, roughly 600 Syrian and 6,400 Turkish people in Canada had temporary status that was about to expire within six months.
