An oncologist Links Liver Dysfunction, and Cancer to Using Toilet Paper.

  • Dr. Eze Njoku, an oncologist, has advised Nigerians to use toilet paper with caution.
  • Studies have shown that the chemicals used in it's manufacture are associated to a number of health issues.
  • Continuous use of toilet paper can cause cancer, infertility, and liver disease.

According to Dr. Njoku, the chlorine chemical used in the manufacture of paper produces harmful pollutants like dioxin and furans, which can build up in the body and cause major health issues.

The specialist explained that the bleaching process used to make toilet paper white contains the use of some dangerous chemicals, which pose risks such as impaired reproduction and development, harm to the immune system, disruption of the endocrine system, and the potential for cancer.

He added that recent research has revealed the presence of a dangerous class of synthetic substances known as PFAS in many different types of toilet paper.

He asserts that PFAS exposure is connected to conditions such as cancer, asthma, thyroid disease, liver damage, and issues with reproduction. He also stated that toilet paper may leak potentially harmful substances into wastewater systems.

Nonetheless, he advised avoiding the bleached and chemical-filled toilet paper in favour of a bidet, washable cloths, or bamboo paper.

"Bleaching" is the process used to make toilet paper white, he said. Although unbleached items are frequently harsher to the touch, most companies choose this method. Bleaching typically involves the use of chlorine, which can generate dioxins. Dioxins are extremely hazardous, and they can cause cancer, immune system damage, reproductive and developmental problems, and endocrine disruption.

"The vast majority of toilet paper contains a variety of dangerous, unhealthy substances. Your toilet paper is more likely to include chemicals if it is whiter, fluffier, and scented.

"The best choice for improved hygiene and environmental protection is the use of a bidet or the installation of a small shower device next to the toilet."
